Artist/ Writer /Illustrator
Since my retirement from teaching art in 2003, I have devoted my energies to
making art myself. Beginning with watercolor and gouache I moved to acrylic and finally oil, my medium of choice. The work displayed in this gallery include a few early pieces and focus on my current direction which is narrative work. I am interested in telling a story with the image, presenting a view of the human condition. I work from photographs that I or family members have taken and seek to create a snapshot of a moment in time. I was particularly entranced by the work of Edgar Degas who was one of the early painters to use genre and cropping to arrive at his compositions. Following in that line of thought, the camera has provided me with subjects. All work is for sale unless otherwise indicated. If you have interest click on the underlined contact Mary Ann Bowman.
